Historical Sites of Interest in Westmoreland County
Called the "Athens of America" during the early 18th century, the Northern Neck boasts great plantations and is the birthplace of three presidents - George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and also General Robert E. Lee. Westmoreland, a county located within the Northern Neck, was established in 1653 by the Colonial Government at Jamestown. More leaders were born here than in any other county in our nation.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument
Rt. 204, southeast of Oak Grove
The Commander of the Continental Army and first President of the United States was born at this site on February 22, 1732.
Birthplace of James Monroe
Rt. 205 between Oak Grove and Colonial Beach
James Monroe, the nation's fifth president was born in 1758 on this
farm near Monroe Bay. He was a member of the Continental Congress, a
U.S. Senator, Minister to France, Minister to England, Governor of
Virginia, Secretary of State and President of the United States from
1817-1825.
Strafford Hall Plantation
Off Rt. 3 northeast of Montross on Rt. 214
Stratford Hall Plantation was home to several generations of famous
Lees. It was the boyhood home of Richard Henry Lee and Francis
Lightfoot Lee, signers of the Declaration of Independence. General
Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 at Stratford Hall. When the Civil War
broke out, Lee was a colonel in the U.S. Army. Refusing to "take part
in an invasion" of his homeland, he left the Union Army. He later led
the Confederate forces against the Union armies.
Ingleside Plantation
Leedstown Road, Oak Grove
Ingleside Plantation has three residences listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. Ingleside is a Classical Revival structure
built in 1834. Wirtland (c. 1850) stands as an excellent example of
Gothic Revival. Roxbury (c. 1861) is a mid-Victorian design made
popular by Calvert Vaux and rarely found in the South. Today, this 3000
acre estate serves as the home of Ingleside Plantation Vineyards and
Ingleside Plantation Nurseries.

Ingleside Plantation Vineyards & Winery
Rt. 3, south of Oak Grove, on Rt. 638
Ingleside is one of the oldest and largest wineries in Virginia. Taste
award-winning wines and tour the grounds. Special events are held
throughout the year.
Westmoreland State Park
Off Rt. 3 north of Montross
Westmoreland State Park is one of the six original state parks opened
in June 1936. The park was built in the 1930s by the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) on the cliffs overlooking the Potomac River.
Westmoreland Berry Farm
Rt. 637, off Rt. 3, take Rt. 634, Oak Grove
This 80 acre farm and orchard overlooking the Rappahannock River
features fruits and berries, fresh produce, jams, ice cream sundaes and
gifts. There is also a petting zoo. Special events are held throughout
the harvest season
Just a short drive from Washington, D.C. (2 hours), Fredericksburg (1 hour), Richmond (1 1/2 hours) and the Hampton Roads/Norfolk (2 hours), is the Northern Neck -- rich in history on both land and water. It is a land of old plantations and historic villages set among the coves and rivers of the Chesapeake Bay.
